The Government owned Airport Alexandroupoli "DEMOKRITUS" is found in distance of 7 km from centre of city of Alexandroupoli in the Thrace. The access in the Airport becomes via International road E90 that connects Greece with Turkey. In future will exist access via the Road Egnatia .  

The initial Airport was created 1944.  

Initially it was constituted  by  a small building and a small runway.  
In 1955 were recognized as international. In 1975 were manufactured the existing infrastructure in buildings and runway. In 1992 received the nickname "Demokritus"  horary of ancient atomic philosopher Demokritus that was born in  Avdira at Thrace.
